The aim of this working paper is twofold: first, to provide an overview of recent research examining individual risk factors, such as gender, health limitations, care responsibilities, and income poverty, that may influence the timing of exit and work exit routes for older workers. Second, to employ descriptive analyses to examine whether the individual factors influence older workers’ intention to retire and their different pathways out of the workforce, and how these factors overlap and may placing individuals with such characteristics in vulnerable situations.
The working paper is organised into three main parts: (1) an overview of the literature on the timing of exit and work exit routes, (2) descriptive analyses for European countries using Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data, and (3) descriptive analyses for Norway using the Norwegian Quality-of-life Survey. Finally, the findings will be discussed.
